This business was passing down by Baba Charlie’s grandmother to his mother and then himself. He was awarded with the Certificate of Appreciation from Taste of Malaysia for 2015 and 2016 by a notable connoisseur, Chef Martin Yan. Today, Baba Charlie Nyonya Kuih is also one of the most remarkable Nyonya kuih specialist who is now known to be making a large variety of sweet and savoury Nyonya kuih in town.
Before the pandemic, Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake used to operate in the traditional wooden house located in a small kampung housing area that you will need to travel into a small narrow alley which is opposite to the Masjid Tengkera along the Jalan Tengkera of Melaka. But for now, the owner has merged the Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake with the second outlet that is Baba Charlie’s Café that sell various types of Nyonya cuisine.
After all, their kuihs are cheap and authentic and also frequented by locals. This is somewhere in Melaka that offers authentic Nyonya desserts. Among all, Baba Charlie Nyonya Cake is one of the more interesting places worth visiting to get your fix of Nyonya kuih. Their products have already reach more than thirty five types and they are still traditionally made until today to maintain the traditional taste that some may almost forgotten Baba Charlie.
They offer a huge selection of sweet kuih such as onde-onde, pulut inti, kuih lapis, kuih koci, kuih talam, pulut tekan, kuih dadar, kuih koo merah to savoury ones like curry potato curry puff, popiah, chai kuih and Nyonya chang. These kuihs are made handmade everyday to maintain the freshness.
Other than Nyonya Kuih addict, some customers even visit Baba Charlie just to get a hand of Malacca popular souvenirs for tourists such as gula Melaka, pineapple tart, kuih dodol, cincalok, sambal belacan, sauce
